In English, we would work on phoneme segmentation (duck = d – u – ck)…in Spanish flip that to syllable segmentation (pato = pa – to). To the extent possible, emphasize that CV syllable! For example, in English we would work on initial phoneme identification (the initial sound in duck is /d/)….in Spanish flip that to initial syllable identification (the initial syllable in pato is /pa/). We know that phonemic awareness is an essential component for early literacy development, and this is no different for students learning to read in Spanish…but how we do that needs to respect the phonological structure of the language. Words are ready syllable by syllable…not sound-by-sound and not using an onset + rime structure.ĭeveloping phonemic awareness for these students should model a similar scope and sequence. As a result, when students are taught to read in Spanish, they typically are taught each of the vowel sounds, and then are taught each consonant…essentially making a series of CV syllable structures (ma, pa, ta, sa, la) that are strung together to make words. This is the most salient feature of the Spanish language, and it is an important unit of processing on a linguistic level. The most significant difference is the important emphasis that is placed on the CV syllable structure. What's the difference of Spanish and English phonology? Training of students in spelling, blending, and segmenting syllables and phonemes may be especially valuable because these skills are closely related to those which students use when actually reading and writing.” ( Dr. There are fewer consonant and vowel phonemes in Spanish, less complex syllable structure and longer words, and phonological development for Spanish speaking children is also different. “The Spanish phonology system is different than that of English. This is critical when teaching phonemic awareness, particularly if the students are going to participate in a dual-language or bilingual experience where they will be taught to read in Spanish. Furthermore, helping children who receive native language instruction cultivate their phonological awareness skills in Spanish will have beneficial effects on Spanish literacy and on later literacy development in English” (Gorman and Gillam, 2003).Īlthough we know that native language development is best practice for bilingual students, the methods of teaching literacy and phonemic awareness are different in Spanish….and rightfully so! While the oral phonology of both English and Spanish may share some similarities, there are important differences that need to keep in mind. “Because children often transfer skills from L1 to L2 as they learn language sequentially, their phonological awareness skills in Spanish should be predictive of their reading acquisition in Spanish as well as in English. Enrolling in an MSP offers relief from these Medicare costs, allowing people to spend that money on other vital needs, including food, housing, or transportation. The MSPs help pay Medicare premiums and may also pay Medicare deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments for those who meet the conditions of eligibility. The MSPs help millions of Americans access high-quality health care at a reduced cost, yet only about half of eligible people are enrolled. This move underlines the importance of having robust measures in place to monitor, report and take action on levels of CO2. This is part of new revisions to Building Regulations which are intended to improve ventilation and IAQ in commercial and residential buildings. In the UK, from June 2022, CO2 monitors will be mandatory in all office buildings and new standards for recirculating ventilation will be introduced. What are the current challenges in maintaining CO2 levels in buildings? However, employers in the UK are still responsible for keeping their employees safe at work. Indoor pollution directives tend to be set out as guidelines, rather than enforceable laws. Many nations, including Japan, Korea, Portugal, France and Norway, have set 1000 ppm of CO2 as the standard for specific indoor environments, including school and office buildings. And, according to ASHRAE, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers, levels of indoor carbon dioxide should be below 700 ppm. The United States Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), for example, has set a permissible exposure limit of 5000 ppm of CO2 as a time-weighted average over 8 hours. ![]() Guidelines can differ according to nation. In these cases, measures should be taken to improve ventilation. What are seen as acceptable CO2 levels typically vary from country to country.įor example, in the UK, the government has agreed to a set of standards for acceptable CO2 levels in indoor spaces:Ĩ00 ppm or below indicates that an indoor space is likely to be well ventilated and has acceptable indoor air quality.Ĭonsistent levels of 1500 ppm and above indicate that the room is badly ventilated. What are acceptable CO2 levels in buildings? In the UK for example, a campaign is underway to monitor CO2 levels in classrooms across the UK to help lower viral transmission risk.Īnd, from June 2022, it will be mandatory for all office buildings to have CO2 monitors. As a result, as we’ve just alluded, high concentrations of indoor CO2 can be used as measures of occupancy and ventilation rate.īut good ventilation is crucial in mitigating the spread of viral infection by aerogenic transmission (infection by small particles that hang in the air), so much so that changes are being made at the national level. Since carbon dioxide is a natural product of human respiration, indoor occupants are its main contributors. CO2 is a measure of indoor ventilation and viral risk For example, the Centers for Disease Control’s National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (CDC) quote the cost of poor indoor environmental quality to US businesses as in the range of $20 to $70 billion per year.Ģ. This has a material impact on businesses. The average American spends 90% of their time indoors and research has found that stuffy, poorly ventilated buildings negatively affect employee productivity. So although relatively high levels of CO2 may not cause health problems directly, they can be viewed as one indicator of poor ventilation, and, as consequence, lowered indoor air quality. ![]() Other indoor air pollutants, such as Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), emitted by some furnishings and building materials, can build up in poorly ventilated buildings without adequate fresh air. Combustion from these sources can also generate other products, such as carbon monoxide (CO) and particulate matter (PM), which both have serious health effects. Since CO2 is a product of combustion, its levels can be raised by things such as vehicle exhausts and furnaces. The quantity of outdoor air being ventilated and the quality of that outdoor air Indoor carbon dioxide levels can vary widely, ranging from a few hundred ppm to 1000 ppm and above. Yes, the books in this series are often re-released with the same internal content and a different binding – many of the titles from the Illustrated Children’s Classicscollection, for example, have the same content as the now out-of-print Rainbow Classicscollection, but have different cover design. Please don’t judge me…) Are some of the books the same just with different covers? I am a big Alice fan if you’d like to see my collection. (I made an exception for that very pretty 2018 Alice omnibus though. And although they look gorgeous, I personally am not a huge fan of the massive omnibus editions because they are really quite unwieldy to read when they get above 600 pages or so. The illustrations are often scanned from reprints, not originals, so they are not as sharp as they could be. And some of the volumes have also had really disappointing errors in the text that are often fixed up in later printings, but that’s not much use if you have an earlier edition (where I am aware of these issues, I have noted the details below). The translations used for foreign language classics are older ones that are in the public domain, and there are often newer ones available that are easier to read (if translation is important to you, I recommend the Penguin Classics, which additionally also have great notes). Internally, I’d classify them as on par with a decent book club edition – they are hybrid bound, with most having sewn signatures glued into the spine, which means they will lay flat, but the glue doesn’t last for a long time. The proof is in the bookshelf, and I have a large number of B&N collectible classics in my own shelves, holding their own against my much more expensive Folio Society and Easton Press books.īut I do have a few caveats. They are all relatively durable hardbacks except for the Flexibound Editions (and even these are way more durable than your average paperback). Most of the books have decorative head and tail bands, gilt or stained page edges, bound-in silk ribbon bookmarks, and decorative hubs on the spine. They are definitely very decorative shelf candy with their gorgeous cover designs and bright colored covers, and I personally think that anything that makes people more likely to pick up and read a classic novel is a great thing. Do they compare in quality to publishers selling fine press leatherbound editions? Of course not. The Flexibound Editions, on the other hand, are pretty much completely faux leather. So yes, most B&N book covers are comprised of about 20% real leather. Basically bonded leather is to leather what chipboard is to wood. ![]() In some cases, a second coating of polyurethane can be added and embossed to create a texture closer to real leather. This is basically a mix of both real leather (leftover scraps and fibres from processing genuine leather) and fake leather (typically a polyurethane binder), rolled together using an adhesive glue and bonded onto a paper backing. The majority of the books in the collectible classics series are covered in ‘bonded’ leather. Visit this page on the Barnes & Noble website to see everything they currently have available in the series. In 2005, they released a highly decorative edition of The Complete Works of Lewis Carrolland its popularity sparked the beginning of the ‘Collectible Classics’ as the series is better known today. The contents were mostly omnibus editions (with several titles by the same author in a single book) and the bindings were very traditional, with dark (bonded) leather covers featuring plain gold text and simple foiled borders, along with raised bands on the spine, gilt page edges, decorative endpapers, and a sewn-in ribbon bookmark. Barnes and Noble brought out their original series of collectible ‘exclusive’ leather-bound classic editions in 1992. ![]() ![]() ![]() This name will appear to other devices on the network which is trying to connect with your PC.ġ1. It’s been cool to see it happen over the past 15 years for Garry and his team. Reducing the friction between the creator of interesting content and the consumer of it has a number of really positive side effects. Garry being able starting at building a product that he thought people would like, to where he is today, is the kind of story we’re always trying to make happen. It was clear that it was a perfect example of a product that would benefit from this, and so we reached out and asked him if he was interested. Was it Valve's idea or Garry's?ĮJ: It was the early days of getting Steam built, and it was pretty clear that Garry’s Mod had a big (and growing) audience. Paid mods are (still) a great source of ire among (some) players. It will be fun to watch what people build with the editor we’re releasing along with Half-Life: Alyx next year. Part of the process for us in shipping any of our games, but especially the single player ones, is letting go of them once they are released, and letting the community take bits and pieces of them in whatever direction they want to. ![]() What's it like to see the beloved characters from Half-Life and other Valve games being used with Garry's Mod for machinima and comics and videos?ĮJ: It’s pretty cool. Garry has always been about as good as it gets at picking the right direction to take his game. It’s a more difficult process than it sounds, because it really comes down to navigating a constant stream of feedback, but being limited in the amount of time to get everything done. We’ve always been impressed by Garry’s ability to iterate on the game and roll feedback from his community into the game so well. That said, it would have been pretty hard to predict the Garry’s Mod of 2019 back in 2004. So, on one hand, it wasn’t surprising that Garry started in a similar place that we did. Even in the early days of development, most of the experiments that people were running had the physics engine at its core. ![]() It felt like Garry’s Mod grew right out of that community after Half-Life 2 shipped.ĭid anyone at Valve have any idea the Source engine could be used the way it is in Garry's Mod? While having the code for Half-Life 2 out in the wild before the game was finished wasn’t a super positive experience for the team finishing the game, it's pretty cool to see what the mod community could get working with that unfinished codebase. I do remember there being a pretty significant, and somewhat underground, mod community that was working off of the Half-Life 2 source code leak from 2003.
